Solution — Voice & multimedia
IMS for VoLTE, VoNR and HD video
Data pays the bills; voice keeps the licence. An IP Multimedia Subsystem delivers multimedia across IP networks while guaranteeing interoperability between different networks and devices.
What Quantum delivers
IMS lets a service provider deploy a wide range of applications while ensuring interoperability between different networks and devices, and it supports a wide range of access networks so connectivity options stay flexible. Quantum deploys the IMS core, integrates it with the packet core, the radio layer, charging and interconnect, and runs the device and roaming interoperability campaign that voice services live or die on.
- Call setup people notice. Roughly two seconds versus more than six on legacy circuit-switched voice.
- Battery and quality both improve. VoLTE reduces handset battery consumption against 2G/3G calling while carrying wideband audio.
- Video as a native service. H.264 and H.265 video calling on the same subsystem, not a bolted-on application.
- Virtualised from day one. NFV architecture means capacity is added as compute, not as a hardware programme.

Straight answers
IMS & Voice — frequently asked
What is IMS and why does an operator need it?
The IP Multimedia Subsystem is the standardised control layer that delivers voice, video and messaging over an IP network. Without it, a 4G or 5G operator has no native voice service and must fall back to legacy circuit-switched networks. IMS is what makes VoLTE and VoNR possible, and it guarantees that calls interoperate across different networks and device types.
What is the difference between VoLTE and VoNR?
VoLTE carries voice over the 4G LTE radio; VoNR carries voice natively over the 5G standalone radio. Both are delivered by the same IMS core. In practice an operator launching 5G SA runs VoNR where coverage allows and uses EPS fallback to VoLTE elsewhere — Quantum integrates both paths.
How fast is call setup on IMS?
Approximately two seconds, compared with more than six seconds on 2G and 3G circuit-switched voice. That difference is the single most visible service improvement subscribers report after a VoLTE launch.
Which codecs are supported?
Voice: PCMA, PCMU, AMR-NB, AMR-WB and EVS. Video: H.264 and H.265. EVS and AMR-WB are what deliver the HD voice experience; H.265 keeps video calling viable at constrained uplink bitrates.
